00:00:10.650Our landfill near Coronation, Alberta, is an environmentally engineered site for the safe disposal of non-hazardous municipal solid waste.
00:00:20.099Since we acquired the site in 2010, we’ve invested in the operation, increased employment to twenty employees, and it has become a contributor to the local economy and social fabric.
00:00:33.860The Coronation landfill adheres to rigorous regulations by Alberta Environment and Parks for designing and operating of landfills to protect the environment in and around the site.
00:00:45.110Landfills are constructed in a series of waste cells. The cells of the coronation landfill involve the use of advanced liner systems with recompete clay. Along with the installation of a geomembrane liner to protect the groundwater. The landfill also has an advanced leachate containment and collection system to capture all the liquid that drains through the landfill, ensuring the protection of local groundwater.
00:01:11.100Leachate is collected through a network of pipes within the landfill and is temporarily stored on-site. The leachate is then sent off-site to a licensed facility for treatment to standard to prove by Alberta Environment and Parks.
00:01:24.049A protective layer of sand is placed over the leachate collection system waste is then allowed to be deposited in the cell. Each day the waste disposed of the landfill cell is covered by soil to prevent odors and exposure to birds and other animals.
00:01:38.700When the cells are filled, a permanent clay cover is placed on top of the waste as a final cap and natural vegetation is planted to create a permanent cover.
00:01:51.029The Coronation landfill has an environmental management system in place. There is a proactive litter control program to prevent the spread of litter on and off-site. This includes installed portable litter barriers around the active part of the landfill, a permanent nine-meter-high fence surrounding the active landfill, and a 2.5-meter-high perimeter fence around the entire site.
00:02:14.490If litter does get past these barriers, we dispatch our crews to collect it. We have a bird management program to prevent gulls from coming to the site by covering the waste materials and by using Hawks to scare away other birds.
00:02:28.730We ensure all on-site roads are watered, and offsite roads are swept. A tree planting program was initiated, which will eventually create visual screening and add to the local landscape.
00:02:42.349There’s also regular monitoring of ground and surface water all around our site, and this data is reviewed by Alberta Environment and Parks, providing assurance the environment is being protected.
00:02:53.390Waste Connections continues to proactively review and update operational programs at the landfill as part of our commitment to keep the local community better informed about the operations of the landill.
00:03:04.010We established a community liaison committee comprised of our immediate neighbors, who regularly meet to hear our plans and provide input.
00:03:11.829Waste Connections recognizes the importance of being a good neighbour and partner in the local community. In addition to the twenty employees who work at the Coronation landfill and live in the surrounding community, Waste Connections also generates tax revenue for the county and makes other contributions to contribute to the community’s vitality through our community enhancement fund partnership with Painters Regional Waste Management Limited.
00:03:36.859The Coronation landfill supports a wide variety of local organizations each year. Waste Connections contributes nearly $90,000. Waste Connections is committed to being a good neighbour and a responsible company by demonstrating its commitment to environmentally responsible practices daily.
