00:00:08.430Hi, this is Anthony Horwath for Auto123.tv. We are visiting Fastco, a Canadian aftermarket manufacturer of alloy wheels. Let’s go check it out.
00:00:28.830My name is Ian Pavelko, and I am the Director of Product Development.
00:00:35.930Well, Fastco started really as the vision of one man, and it is still to this day. Glenn Chaplin, our president, has been in the automotive business for about 40 years now, and he is a proper died-in-the-world car nut.
00:00:48.310Cars became his lifeblood, his passion. He started in automotive aftermarket retailing and then after about 25 years of that, he decided to go to the next level and get into distribution.
00:00:57.530So in 1995, Glenn launched the Fast line of wheels, which started with three models and has now, 18 years later, gotten to the stage where you see it today, where we have over 90 models and about 40,000 wheels in inventory.
00:01:13.490We put a very high emphasis on quality control at the factory, everything to do with the packaging of the wheel, and a big part of it is the research and development aspect, which we’re going to see a little later in terms of how we determine what wheel fits on the car.
00:01:27.110We’re very, very obsessed with being technically correct regarding the fitment details of our wheels and how they will perform out there. So, it’s a big difference compared to anybody else in our business.
00:01:36.450So, no matter what the car is and what the customer is after, chances are we have something to fit it.
00:01:50.630What you see behind me is the cornerstone of the technology that makes us different as a wheel company, not just in the Canadian landscape but worldwide. We are one of the only wheel companies that can do 3D digital mapping of vehicles and wheels to ensure that we get a 100% technically perfect fit every time.
00:02:18.690What we have here is a rather sophisticated machine for the job. It’s a Mazak vertical mill, three-axis computer-controlled. The precision of it is way more significant than what you typically see in drilling operations for wheels.
00:02:31.430Most wheel shops or manufacturers that do custom drilling use a drill press on steroids. Well, this is far beyond. When you look at this 3-axis computer-controlled mill, it’s something more typically seen in the aerospace industry.
00:02:43.370What sets us apart is training for individual applications, so having a drill wheel program gives us tremendous flexibility in the ability to do a lot of custom d inventory. We can offer the customers a much quicker turnaround and cover a much more comprehensive range of vehicles.
00:03:07.190This is the end result of everything we’ve seen so far, and it’s equally as crucial as everything from the design phase to the quality control to all the technical fitment issues. We have to be just as careful to ensure that the customer gets what they ordered first and then arrives in good condition. So the gentlemen behind me are in charge of doing that and are as maniacal and meticulous as anybody else in our building.
00:03:32.430Wow! So we saw the magic behind the machine. For more information, you can visit their website, fastco.ca or auto123.com
